Representing the five "days out of time" that follow the end of the Mayan year, the Wayeb is considered a time of reflection and transition after the old year ends and before the new year begins.
The Mayans believed that during Wayeb, the barriers between the earthly and spiritual realms weakened, making it a time to honor ancestors and engage in rituals for protection and renewal. It was also a time for self-reflection, allowing individuals to prepare for the coming year’s challenges and opportunities.
